The house itself is amazing, so rich with history and the art and furniture is wonderful, however, the tour operator (an older lady) was awful. She was very patronising, quite rude, rushed our small group of 5 from one room to the next as soon as she’d delivered whatever speech she’d lined up and we were hustled from room to room so quickly it was very hard to actually see everything. My husband and I, are in our late 30’s and own a 1905 bungalow of our own and absolutely love anything historic and unfortunately the guide’s attitude put a real dampener on the experience and made us all feel a bit stupid. We also had no chance to admire the grounds outside and the tour didn’t include 2 of the 4 floors. House is incredible, definitely worth a visit but I hope you get a nicer guide! *** Your response to our review was a bit disappointing, deflecting blame doesn’t help anyone. Had we known the lovely guy we were speaking with in the gift shop was a supervisor we WOULD have provided feedback on our tour guide but it’s hardly appropriate unless you know that you’re speaking with the appropriate person.
Beautiful home. Definitely book ahead for a daily tour to enjoy this place fully ($27.5 for one adult). My guide Kirsten was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The tour itself last about 1hr. I think there are about 4 or 5 tours /day and only 10 per tour group, so I advice booking in advance. They have lots of interesting stuff inside the house with a lot of history as the family is a prominent wealthy family during early Dunedin history. You are allowed to take picture inside (without flash), despite what the website said, which were much appreciated. My only warning is that it is located up hill and the streets are quite steep. Be careful if you are not very fit and plan to walk there.
Olveston house is well worth the visit. Free parking and wonderful tours. Little gift shop. The house was an absolute delight, wonderfully kept and the restored car in the garage. Gardens were just as nice. This is still a used home with the top two floors lived in and you can book private events and join them for afternoon tea, evening meals or hosted events of interest. You will not be disappointed. Well worth the visit
