Back in 2008 I rode my bike from Cockburn Harbor to the old Coast guard station to see the Tower and the transmitting station. I love the barracks and the remnants of the transmitter that still was there, and the huge water collection system. The highlight of the base of course is the giant transmitting antenna! There were a couple dozen burros I met on the base, but the most intriguing wildlife was the bull I encountered on the dirt road while on my ride back down to my boat. It stopped me in my tracks, and we stared each other for a moment until I could turn around and ride away... at the reduced speed that a skinny tire road bike could do on a dirt road. Suddenly I remembered something from what I read and I did a 180 and went straight to the bull which was 100 m away. By the time we got 40 to 50 m from each other, the bull stopped and walked off the road into the bush, unwilling to confront something coming toward it at speed. Wow, that was exciting.

Awesome trip out here on bikes from Salterra. About 7 miles each way. Very cool to see the ruins of the old station and then walk up to Plandon Cay Cut.

Cool spot by on the North end of the Island. Keep going north from the actual ruins and you can see both sides of the peninsula pretty well. Highly recommend doing this hike in tennis shoes.

This site is mostly unpatrolled and is quite removed from settled areas, so it is important to take precautions to preserve personal safety and to prevent injury and crime. The remains of this decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard station are in a magnificently beautiful setting, easy to reach by road. Spend some time walking around here for part of a day!
