Independence Monument Climb Offers Classic Colorado Desert Adventure

An unforgettable guided climbing experience at Independence Monument in Colorado National Monument invites adventurers to take on one of the region’s most iconic sandstone formations. Located just over an hour from Moab, this beginner-friendly multipitch route provides a rewarding blend of hiking, climbing, and panoramic desert scenery.

The ascent follows Otto’s Route, a four-pitch climb rated 5.9 that includes a variety of terrain such as face climbing, crack systems, and steeper exposed sections. While accessible to determined beginners, the route also offers enough technical variety to engage more experienced climbers seeking a classic desert challenge.

The adventure begins with a scenic one-hour hike to the base of the towering formation, where participants are greeted by sweeping views of the surrounding canyon country. After reaching the summit, climbers complete a controlled descent via two rappels back to the ground, guided at every step by a certified climbing professional.

All necessary technical equipment, permits, and safety guidance are provided to ensure a secure and well-supported experience. Participants are advised to bring essentials such as water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate footwear. With preparation and expert instruction, the climb offers a memorable opportunity to reach the top of a legendary Colorado landmark and take in the dramatic desert landscapes from above.
