Canyon Lake offers a truly unique paddling adventure in the heart of Tonto National Forest, surrounded by towering canyon walls and striking desert landscapes. This guided tour includes instruction for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, followed by a 3-4 mile out-and-back paddle that lasts approximately 2.5 hours. Along the way, paddlers will pass notable sites such as Tortilla Creek, Mormon Flat Dam, and First Water Bridge. Wildlife is abundant here, and visitors may spot bald eagles, hawks, blue herons, bobcats, mule deer, and desert bighorn sheep perched high on the canyon cliffs. This adventure is suitable for paddlers of all levels, though participants should be prepared to get wet during the tour.
Tours operate year-round, with launch points from Acacia Recreation Site or other locations depending on weather and conditions. All necessary equipment is provided, including a kayak or paddleboard, paddle, PFD, dry bag, Tonto Forest Parking Pass, water, and light snacks. Guests are advised to wear sun-protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and shoes that can get wet, and to bring extra water, snacks, sunscreen, a camera with floating case, and a change of dry clothes. Double kayak options are available for children or larger parties, and all participants must be able to swim. The tour is guided by certified instructors with CPR and ACA qualifications, ensuring a safe and informative experience while exploring the beautiful Canyon Lake and surrounding waterways.
