As a history major, going to see the Conímbriga ruins was definitely an experience. See Roman architecture that is still standing today in a sort of remote area is amazing. Not crowded at all, so you can explore at your own pace. I would suggest going during spring so it is a little cooler.

The Conimbriga Ruins near Coimbra are the remains of an ancient Roman city founded nearly two thousand years ago. If you’re visiting Coimbra and have some extra time, I highly recommend making the trip to see these fascinating ruins. You can easily get there by Uber from Coimbra. The site is well maintained, the staff are friendly and helpful, and there’s a small museum and café on-site. Tip: In summer, be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and a hat—the sun can be intense and there’s very little shade.

Wow! Visiting the Conímbriga ruins is truly a remarkable experience that blends history, atmosphere, and hospitality into one unforgettable day. The site itself is breathtaking—walking among the ancient Roman remains, you can almost feel the daily lives of the people who once inhabited this city. The mosaics are incredibly well preserved, with vibrant designs that continue to impress even after centuries. The layout of the villas, baths, and streets is both fascinating and educational, offering a clear glimpse into Roman urban planning. What adds to the experience is not just the history but also the care taken to make visitors feel welcome. The staff throughout the site are friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about sharing knowledge. After exploring, the on-site café is a delightful surprise. The service is warm and attentive, and it’s the perfect place to pause and enjoy a relaxed coffee or light meal while overlooking the peaceful surroundings. It provides a wonderful moment of rest before continuing your journey through the ruins. Overall, Conímbriga is not only a site of great historical importance but also a beautifully managed place that makes learning about the past enjoyable, comfortable, and deeply memorable. A must-visit for history lovers.

Nicely preserved Roman ruins. Amazing mosaic on the floors. Stanning fountains with mosaic all around. We have spent almost 4 hours wondering around, reading all information, and enjoying the history. It's pretty hot when the day is sunny.

Definitely a worthy half day excursion - but if taking kids, best if they are of the age to listen to/read the history markers and obey off limit areas. The mosaics alone make this visit worth it. Very informative and impressive preservation of influential and impactful history. Free for residents :)
