Gjirokastra: Stone City of Towers Tells Story of Power, Conflict, and Heritage
The historic city of Gjirokastër, once an important administrative hub in the 19th century, reflects a layered past shaped by wealth, conflict, and strategic importance. During this period, affluent landowning families constructed fortified tower houses designed to combine domestic comfort with defensive strength, mirroring the region’s unstable political environment.
With more than 500 preserved historic buildings, Gjirokastër’s unique architecture bears witness to a time marked by frequent internal disputes and resistance movements against Ottoman rule. The city’s fortified design was heavily influenced by the need for protection, as local communities navigated tensions between regional power struggles and the authority of the Ottoman Empire centred in Istanbul.
At the heart of the city stands the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, a landmark that traces the origins of the settlement and continues to dominate the skyline. From this elevated stronghold, traditional Ottoman-style neighbourhoods spread outward, characterised by narrow stone streets and cascading rooftops that descend into the valley below.
Today, Gjirokastër presents a striking contrast between preservation and modern life. While its historic core remains a living museum of Albanian heritage, newer developments, including a modern university complex in the lower city, reflect its evolving identity. Together, these layers of history and contemporary growth make Gjirokastër a vivid symbol of Albania’s cultural resilience and architectural legacy.

Customer Reviews

This is the hostel to stay in if travelling to Gjirokastër!! Yes, it is a little bit more expensive than the other hostels in the area, but one is also paying for the experience, and having a place to hang out and socialise with others, a good breakfast, great location and an informative host. There is space to chill inside or on the terraces outside. I love that the hostel does not allow shoes inside! It felt very clean, safe and a great vibe. You could socialise or chill depending on your vibes. The hostel organises one thing a day - be it a free walking tour of the city (lead by Walter), a traditional dinner hosted by a local (I think on a Wednesday for 10€, but, I could be wrong. My understanding is that a huge spread of traditional foods are provided). There are also games played, cocktail night and family dinner (5€). Possibly more??

It seems like there's been more than enough said about how excellent this hostel is, but you really can't emphasise it enough. Walter and his team smash it consistently, offering the perfect blend of comfort and fun. All the staff and volunteers get to know you by name. We stayed over Halloween and they put together an awesome pre drinks event that then saw us heading out. Dinner the night before at a local house was an absolute treat, as was the offer of daytime activities even though Gjirokaster itself offers plenty to do day and night. Top marks, no notes.

The Stone City Hostel is located in the heart of the old town of Gjirokastër. We had a great view of the castle and the mountains from our private room. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and they prepared a really nice breakfast for everyone. We also joined the city tour with Walter and highly recommend it. It was one of the most fun and interesting guided sightseeing tours we’ve ever done.
