I just completed the 3D/2N Huayna Potosí trek with Huayna Potosí Travel Agency / Refugio Huayna Potosí. PROS: * The agency is operated by Dr Hugo, a medical doctor with decades of mountaineering experience. * The two refugios are privately owned by the agency and the best refugios on the mountain. * The base camp (4700m) is large, comfortable, and set amongst turquoise waters with beautiful views of Huayna Potosí. * The high camp (5315m) is the highest of all the camps, which equates to approximately 100m/1 hour less to climb on summit day. * They maintain a maximum two-clients-per-guide ratio. We were three people with two guides and a cook. * You get taken to the warehouse the first day to try out and test all the rental equipment. * We learnt heaps of fun ice-climbing skills the first day, and even got to rappel down the glacier. * The guides are supportive and experienced. * The food at base camp is excellent. CONS: * The equipment is decent quality but well-used. My sleeping bag had very little fill left in it and did not keep me warm. My boots were a size too big because they didn’t have my size (EU40).
Refuggios Huayna Potosi is a credible and good value for money agency for climbing mountains in the surrounding area. The agency is owned by Dr Hugo - an emergency surgeon who also has specialisation in altitude medicine, also is an internationally certified guide with lots of mountaineering experience. On our request, the agency arranged a 2 night/2 day trek to Huayna potosi - as a private tour for 2 of us for 900 bolivianos per person. We got good quality equipment, although used. We had a chance to go through the "store" ourselves and pick what we liked, which was nice. The company actually owns the refuggios on the mountain, and they are very good facilities. The lower base camp is a lovely mountain hut, we were served delicious food there! And the high base camp is the best base camp you can get because it's the highest one of all the high base camps on the mountain (at 5,300 - so compared to other agencies you have at least 100m elevation less to walk in the morning which is actually a big big big pro!) Our guide Humberto was ok - there were things we really liked and things we didn't like. He was there when we needed him - i.e. the crisis moments of the hike. He was very calm and we felt safe with him. We also requested to leave a bit earlier than the rest of the groups to make sure we make it to the top on time and he did agree with 20 minutes before the usual time (although not the requested 40). The downside was that we felt he was a bit annoyed that I walk very slow, as if he preferred to be everywhere fast and have more time for himself. He also could have been more supportive with allowing time for pictures - again we felt being rushed... of course we understand time restraints on the ice but we were back at the camp well on time and don't really have a nice photo with view from the top.. We have read great reviews of other guides from the company though, and we may have just not been a perfect fit with our one - and even despite that he was supportive enough to help us make it to the top and was great in our crisis situations, ie during the descent when we struggled at the high camp he allowed some extra time and made tea for us. There were some other real nice things that were provided - like a delicious lunch at the low base camp after descent, when we were also allowed as much time as we needed to recharge before the journey back. Also, you get double portions if you are still hungry (their meals are massive though). The lovely cook Lilly in the base camp is really caring!! :) Of course there are other things the agency can improve - they advertised that we would be provided tea on the top which wasn't the case and didn't include backpack rental in the price as other agencies do..but we didn't find these to be a big issues. Overall we chose this agency mainly because positive reviews, credibility and because the high camp is the highest.. and we would recommend to others for the same reasons.
