My partner and myself spent the 24th July with Jamie making knives. We were travelling abroad on a 5 month OE from New Zealand and Ireland was our last stop before heading home. What I can safely say is that this is one of the most unique and memorable experiences of our time in Ireland (let alone our entire trip traveling abroad). The experience of taking raw steel and working it by hand is as fatiguing as it is rewarding. Jamie was a fantastic instructor with the patience of a saint (and the banter of a comedian). He was incredibly thorough with guiding us through every bit of the process. From picking out the iron (at his recommendation), heating it, working it in the forge until it was glowing red hot then taking it to the Anvil to beat it into shape. All the while educating us on the process of black smithing, metallurgy and even throwing in some history lessons about Ireland and the evolution of steel throughout the ages. My partner made a viking ladies knife whilst I opted for a more traditional looking knife with a wooden handle. Jamie gave us free reign to suggest what style of knives we would like to make and guided us throughout the process without being too over bearing or letting us go astray. The beauty of this is that you can be as hands off/on as you want and Jamie will be there to either take things off your hands when the going gets tough, or give you a nudge in the right direction should you go astray. The experience is a unique albeit challenging one. The forge is hot and can become hard work if you don't take care to stay hydrated and have regular tea breaks. Even swinging the hammer to work the red hot steel is deceivingly exhausting. No shame is asking to take a break, blacksmithing is far tougher than it looks in the movies. The knives we made have become the most valued pieces we took home to New Zealand. Fond memories of a beautiful country but the memory of making them together is as treasured as the knives themselves.
