Gjirokastra Castle and Old Town Offer Deep Dive into Albania’s Living History

The historic city of Gjirokastra is drawing visitors into its UNESCO-listed heritage core, where the imposing Castle of Gjirokastra dominates the skyline and serves as the starting point for many explorations. Originally constructed in the 12th century and later expanded under Ottoman rule, the fortress stands as a testament to the city’s strategic importance and layered history.

Inside the castle walls, visitors encounter a network of defensive towers, a clock tower, a church and ancient cisterns that reflect centuries of military and civic life.
