Begin your journey with a departure from Tirana and travel to the historic city of Berat, one of Albania’s most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Upon arrival, you’ll be transported back in time as you explore the Berat Castle, a remarkably preserved fortress that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. What makes this castle truly unique is that it is still inhabited, allowing you to experience a rare blend of past and present. As you walk through its ancient stone streets, you’ll feel the presence of history echoing through the lived-in homes and quiet courtyards. The tour continues with a visit to the Onufri Museum, located within the castle grounds. Dedicated to the renowned 16th-century Albanian painter Onufri, the museum displays an extraordinary collection of religious icons and artworks. Onufri’s use of a vivid red hue—so distinct that it remains a mystery to modern colorists—earned him the title “the painter of Rosso,” and viewing his masterpieces in their native setting is a rare cultural treat.
Your exploration of Berat continues with a visit to the elegant Ottoman-era bridge, a symbol of the city’s rich architectural heritage. Next, stroll through the picturesque neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorrica, which sit on opposite sides of the Osum River. These historic quarters are famed for their strikingly unique houses with rows of large windows, stacked atop one another on the hillside—an image so iconic it inspired the city’s nickname, “The City of a Thousand and One Windows.” As you admire the fusion of Albanian and Ottoman influences in the design and layout of these districts, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Berat’s harmonious blend of culture, history, and daily life. After a full day of discovery, the journey concludes with your return to Tirana, leaving you with lasting memories of one of Albania’s most captivating cities.

We joined the Freewalking Tour with Bruno at 5 PM and it was absolutely fantastic! Bruno took so much time with us, guiding us through Berat for two and a half hours. Along the way, we not only discovered the most beautiful parts of the city but also learned so much about its history and about Albania in general. He shared personal stories, fascinating details about architecture, politics, language, culture, and the people. On top of that, he gave us lots of great tips for the rest of our trip and even made himself available via WhatsApp at any time for questions. The tour was engaging, informative, and fun, truly one of the best free walking tours we’ve ever done. Thank you so much, Bruno!

One of the best walking tours I’ve done! I really enjoyed this experience during my visit to charming Berat. Bruno is very knowledgeable and makes sure everyone learns about the city’s rich history while also enjoying their time. He also recommended one of the best restaurants I ate at in Albania. Highly recommend this tour!

We really enjoyed the walking tour round Berat with Bruno. He was very friendly and engaging and gave good recommendations. We learnt a lot about the city of Berat and some history. It’s such a cute little town! The walk up to the castle at the end is quite challenging even if you’re fit but it’s worth it. It was raining the day we took the tour but still really glad we did it. Thanks Bruno!
