St. Maarten Heritage Journey Combines Plantation History With Panoramic Mountain Views

A culturally immersive experience in Sint Maarten begins at a carefully restored 18th-century plantation house, now transformed into a museum that explores the island’s layered and complex history. Through exhibits and storytelling, visitors learn about Trace Wilson, born into slavery on the estate in 1818, and her descendant Emilio Wilson, whose legacy helps shape the narrative of resilience and identity on the island.

The museum experience provides context on plantation life, highlighting the customs, traditions, and social structures that influenced the development of local culture. This introduction offers a deeper understanding of how historical experiences contributed to Sint Maarten’s modern identity, often described as “The Friendly Island.”

Following the visit, guests board the Sky Explorer for a scenic ascent lasting around 25 minutes to the summit of Sentry Hill, the island’s highest point at 1,125 feet. The ride offers sweeping views of lush landscapes and coastline as travellers rise above the island’s varied terrain.

At the top, viewing platforms provide a 360-degree panorama stretching across neighbouring islands including Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Barts, and Anguilla. After descending, visitors can relax on the estate grounds, enjoying refreshments and the tranquil atmosphere that blends history, nature, and reflection into a single island experience.
