The guide and driver went smoothly; they were very friendly! In Port Ghalib, our small group split up… and I ended up on a pirate ship with only four passengers, including the crew 😅 Of course, I immediately asked the crew how often one sees dugongs, and I was told that it hadn't been seen for weeks… and suddenly someone shouted: “Sea cow!” There it was! Now everything happened incredibly fast: gear on, camera ready, shirt off, and off into the inflatable boat! As soon as we reached the animal, I jumped into the water and simply enjoyed it! Such a beautiful animal, completely relaxed, like a vacuum cleaner making its rounds on the seabed! We also saw a very large sea turtle and a black anemonefish! Then it was back on board for a short break before the second round. BUT the sea became so rough that the few passengers were now struggling with seasickness! But nobody can be blamed for that! After an hour of shopping at the harbor, we went back to the hotel.

Marsa Mubarak is an amazing spot for snorkeling and diving! The place isn’t crowded at all, and the marine life is just beautiful — you can easily see turtles, colorful corals, and lots of fish. The best thing is that it’s completely free, and you can reach it directly from the beach without paying for an expensive boat trip that usually stops at the same spot. The water is crystal clear and the atmosphere is peaceful — definitely one of the best hidden gems in Marsa Alam

Very nice to spot the Dugong and big Turtles! While snorkeling! For the rest there is not too much to see. Next to the pier lies a small reef which had some nice fishes but that is all we encountered. Could be on the other side?! We were here walking from Fayrouz around the corner at 6.30 AM. An almost empty bay! THAT is the time recommendable! We see the boats from Port Ghalib going there ALL DAY. NOT RECOMMENDABLE! How do you spot the Dugong? A bit of luck...and closely watch the surface: it's a mammal and while eating the seagrass it will go up every 30-40 seconds. While we were there it was in the shallows as we did not expect (3 meters)

It’s a great place to spot a dugong Never while diving but snorkelling! It takes sometimes few hours to find it but they come here to eat grass that grows on the shallow sea bottom. There are many turtles here too! Like dozens of them. Sometimes you can spot other fishes as well.

The place to be if you want to see turtles and if really lucky the seacow. You should be able to see turtles at any time of the day but before 10am would be preferable as the tourist boats after that and then it can be quite chaotic. Spot for the small turtle heads at the surface or try directly along the orange floaters. Near the pier there’s some nice reef as well as the whole northern part of Marsa Mubarak. A life vest is advised but more to avoid ignorant tourist wanting to touch the fauna. There’s no control on using life vesta though so for good swimmers there’s no problem.
