Awesome historical site! If you have a chance, you must visit.
We visited in Nov. 2024 as Americans with a rental car. We drove from Hurghada and then on to Luxor via the Temple at Dendera. Although we passed through several police checkpoints, we were not stopped at any time getting to the site. The road the site is off of is a modern 4-lane highway. It is also a toll road (15 LE ~$0.30 when we visited). There are no signs for the site, so monitor Google Maps closely to see when you are getting close. There is a dirt/gravel road to the site. The entrance has been blocked off (see pictures) and we parked along the main road and walked. Locals have made various tracks around the block in order to access the road as it seems there is a well or water source here as well as the ruins. You will likely see some locals on trucks—they will wave and may offer you a ride, although we did not take one. The gravel road has become quite rutted as a result of this traffic, and for that reason, as well as the difficult access from the main road, I would only recommend trying to drive here with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. As it is, the walk to the site from the road is fairly short (one way 30-45 min, 1.75 miles, 3 km) and it is very scenic. The site itself is incredible and very impressive to explore. It would be great if there were some interpretation of the ruins, but exploring without them is a unique and unforgettable experience. On the road into the site you will pass a low Roman wall, some guard towers in a low mountain pass to cross between wadis, and a larger set of ruins to the left off the road. After this you enter into the large wadi where the main ruins are. The site includes a large fort with a number of rooms and doors preserved inside and several ancillary buildings including what appears to have been a bath complex, a fancier house? with some preserved stucco, and a building with some finer stone carving that may have been a temple. There are also many broken columns and shattered pots around the site. An amazing visit!
Of course nothing to do with the Pyramids or Luxor and Karnak, and not the easiest places to access. But when you get there the place is one of the most interesting, it is easy to imagine life there and it is also very interesting to see the way of working in the quarries at that time. I really enjoyed this place.
