My father and I were visiting Florence and wanted to do a wine trip to Tuscany. Going forward we will only be recommending Grape Tours to our friends and family. Rebecca created a wonderful itinerary for the day - three wineries and a farm to table lunch. We also got to stop in the village of Montalcino to take pictures and explore. The wineries picked are all smaller, family owned businesses that aren’t the mass producers most commonly seen in the USA. Our guide Matteo was fantastic - he truly helped make the day so special. We would 1000% do this again!
I booked in the off season (November) and planned 1 month ahead. My tour had 6 people in total and our tour guide Darragh (aka D) was extremely intelligent on wine, tourism, and very friendly. He safely drove us out to two vineyards on the Super Chianti tour. He answered and quizzed us on wine. The additional folks (Jackie & the staff at Fattoria Corzano e Paterno) on the tour were just as amazing. I’m still a white wine girl but the appreciation I had for Chianti wine is forever. If you’re unsure about booking I’d say do it! As for the dietary restrictions they are thoughtful and helped a non gluten visitor with bread options. As for the food, there were cheeses, bread and olive oil at the winery’s. The restaurant option was to die for! Chef inspired meals, fresh cuts of meat and amazing side dishes. The drive does have hills and if you are prone to motion sickness you may feel ill.
We took the small-group "Super Chianti" tour and it was worth every penny! The tour starts in Florence, so you don't need to worry about transportation to the Chianti region. The tour guide drives you in an 8-passenger van. Our tour guide, Quentin, is an oenologist. Not only was he an expert in every part of the chianti-making process, but knew a wide range of history of Chianti, Tuscany, and Italy. His stories were descriptive and entertaining. At the first winery, he gave us a tour of the wine-making process and we sampled four wines and cheese pairings. The cheese was made at the winery with the milk of the sheep they keep there. At the second winery, we sampled chianti classicos and the owner led us on a tour. In between, was a highlight of the trip - lunch at Dario Cecchini's restaurant in Panzano. After eating this incredible meal, we got to see the man himself, butchering cuts of beef in his shop, listening to heavy metal! The views were breath taking, the wine and food were delicious, and the wisdom gained from the tour guide unforgettable. This tour was one of our favorite activities of our two-week trip to Italy.
