Fláajökull Glacier Adventure Combines Kayaking, Hiking, and Ice Exploration in Remote Iceland

A multi-activity glacier experience in southeastern Iceland takes travelers into the secluded landscapes of Fláajökull, an outlet glacier known for its quiet, less-visited surroundings. The tour begins at Smyrlabjörg Hotel, where guests receive a safety briefing before continuing by 4x4 into a remote moss-covered valley shaped by waterfalls and glacial melt.

The approach hike leads past the striking Bólstaðafoss waterfall and continues toward a hidden lake surrounded by rugged terrain. From here, participants launch kayaks and paddle across calm waters directly toward the glacier wall, offering an uncommon close-range perspective of the ice.

After reaching shore, guests switch to glacier trekking gear and explore the ice on foot. With crampons fitted, they traverse crevasses, moulins, and sculpted ice formations, gaining insight into the constantly shifting structure of the glacier.
