Rovaniemi Devils Churns Sculptures

Discover the geological wonders of Sukulanrakka, located just 25 kilometers from Rovaniemi. This unique site is home to 14 fascinating ‘devil’s churns,’ natural potholes carved into the bedrock over thousands of years. Among these formations, three are some of the largest in Finland, including a massive pothole measuring 8 meters in diameter and 15 meters deep. Two others reach depths of 9 and 10 meters, perched dramatically atop rocky slopes, offering a striking visual display of nature’s power.

These remarkable formations were created around 10,000 years ago as the continental ice sheet melted, unleashing torrents of meltwater that shaped the landscape. As water surged through tunnels beneath the glacier, it eroded the rock, carving out deep depressions and leaving behind swirling eddies and boulders. This process ultimately produced the captivating devil’s churns seen today, offering a glimpse into the dynamic forces of nature and the incredible geological history of the region.
