Discover the geological wonders of Sukulanrakka, located just 25 km from Rovaniemi, where nature has carved an extraordinary landscape over millennia. The area is home to 14 striking ‘devil’s churns,’ or potholes, with three of Finland’s largest standing out: one measuring 8 meters in diameter and 15 meters deep, and two others reaching depths of 9 and 10 meters along the rocky slopes. These formations provide a fascinating glimpse into the raw power of natural forces and the artistry of erosion.

These incredible potholes were formed approximately 10,000 years ago during the melting of the continental ice sheet. As torrents of meltwater rushed through tunnels at the base of the glacier, they eroded the rock, removing soil and leaving behind deep depressions. The swirling eddies and boulders within these currents drilled into the rock, creating the dramatic and captivating devil’s churns visible today. Visiting Sukulanrakka offers a rare opportunity to witness one of Finland’s most impressive and ancient natural phenomena.
