Absolutely beautiful hike - a must-do on Santorini We visited Santorini with family and friends in August 2025 and stayed in a villa in Imerovigli, just off the Fira-Oia trail, giving us immediate access to this unforgettable hike. We experienced the trail in two parts: The first one was a morning hike - Imerovigli (our villa) to Oia. Starting at 7am to avoid the heat, we walked all the way to Oia, explored the town, and took a taxi back. The hike was awesome, with stunning views of the Caldera, Oia, and even the opposite side of the island. Beginning early was the right choice, as it became hot toward the end. This section should not be attempted in the dark, as the trail passes through natural, unlit areas. The second hike was late in the evening, in the dark - Imerovigli (our villa) to Fira and back - a completely different experience. Following a labyrinth of passages between white-and-blue villas, restaurants, and bars stacked along the Caldera slope, all beautifully lit and glowing at night was something unreal, we’ve never experienced before. The trail itself was enchanting, and the panoramic views of Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli illuminated in different colors were breathtaking. We even spotted cruise ships glowing at Fira Port, with a couple sailing off into the night. The entire trail is of easy to moderate difficulty and is well-marked, so following the signs to Fira / Imerovigli / Oia ensures you won’t get lost — even after dark. Overall, hiking the Fira-Oia trail was an amazing highlight of our Santorini trip. We highly recommend it if you enjoy hiking and are looking for unforgettable views.
Don’t miss this. It was the highlight of our Santorini stay. Catch walking route 9 close to city centre in Fira. It’s a walk path marked by a red sign post. Most of the path in Fira & oia are cobble stone or proper paved paths but once you leave Fira and before you get closer to Oia, it is rugged terrain, a bit slippery with some skree at places. It is a long walk around 9 km and takes around 3-4 hrs on a steady pace. It is long but doesn’t demand any extraordinary fitness. The visuals are stunning though. We were lucky to have a pleasant bright day with blue skies and it was magical. Pack snacks and water. There are many places on the way where you can grab a drink but Nov being off season most of them were closed. The views of the west coast are stunning and you will return with a smile and a camera full of pictures. If in summer start early to escape the crowds and sun. We did it as an all day exercise and took a divert to climb the skaros rock as well and finished at the Oia castle to watch the lovely sunset.
You can definitely do this hike even if you arent an avid hiker but it can be quite tedious! Be sure to wear some good hiking shoes, pack water and powerade, energy smacks and wear a hat and suncreen. You can venture off to Skaros Rock but that can easily be an adventure done on a different day while exploring Fira. There is a small road side shop along the way to get some snacks/drinks but there isn't a whole lot there. However, the fresh orange was delicious! A little Greek orthodox church was open along the way which was a nice detour to explore and an outside toilet area (not the best but good enough for emergency use!) The views are amazing so make sure you stop and look around! Lots of loose rocks to watch out for while hiking and quite windy at times. Start early so you arent in the afternoon heat... it got hot in some areas even on October with the black rocks. Plenty of restaurants in Oia once you get there and then continue exploring the town. Catch the bus to return back to the Fira bus station. This is a full day adventure but worth it!
