April in Patagonia felt like stepping into a prehistoric dream—our tiny tour group rumbled from Puerto Natales, and none of us were ready for the awe of Cueva del Milodón Natural Monument. I’ve explored caves worldwide, from European limestone labyrinths to Icelandic lava tubes, but nothing prepared me for this glacial-carved giant’s sheer scale: 200 meters deep, 10 meters high, its rough walls casting shadows that made every crevice feel like a hidden secret. Beyond its size lies wild, ancient history. In 1895, a Chilean explorer unearthed preserved fur, bones and dung of the Mylodon darwinii—a 10,000-year-old giant ground sloth, as tall as an elephant. Later digs found stone tools too, proof early humans once sheltered here alongside these prehistoric beasts. Standing there, running a hand along the cool rock, I pictured it: lumbering sloths padding through the dark, ancient fires flickering in the distance. This cave isn’t just big—it’s a time capsule, holding echoes of a long-gone world. By the time we headed out, Patagonian wind whipped the grasslands. Our small group climbed back into the van, still reeling—not just from the cave’s size, but from the quiet magic of standing where history and wilderness collide so vividly. Cueva del Milodón isn’t just a Patagonia must-see. It’s a place that sticks with you, long after the tour van fades away.

Is it a must do in Puerto Natales? I don’t think so. Is it a nice thing to do if you have a free day? Sure thing. I did not really get why this is the Milodon cave as there a no bones or excavations but its just a cave in the end. I did a bike tour from PN and I enjoyed the good views.

I really liked this little park. Had a lot to do an even if you were not physically all that "strong" you could still see most of the sites. Great for familes.

This is a fun cave. It cost $11,000/adult, free for under 12s. We loved reading about the history and exploring the giant cave. It’s great for a picnic. There are bathrooms.

This cave is famous by the fact that prehistoric Mylodons leaved here. The footprints show that pumas and foxes visit this cave at night. This is not a very long but very wide cave.
