Discover the rich culture and heritage of the Newar people, one of Nepal’s distinct ethnic groups and the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley. Explore the charming towns of Bungmati, Khokana, and Kirtipur, where exquisite architecture, hilltop temples, and sweeping city views await. Wandering through the winding streets feels like stepping into a traditional Nepali village, offering some of the finest panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding hills and mountains. The towns are filled with cobblestone streets, old brick houses with elaborately carved doors and window frames, and multitiered pagodas. Despite being overlooked by many travelers, these Newari towns provide an authentic glimpse into centuries-old culture and traditions, making them a worthwhile addition to any Kathmandu itinerary.
Experience the unique history and spiritual significance of these towns. Bungmati is the hometown of the deity Machhindranath, the revered patron of the valley, with a large shikhara-style temple situated at the center of the village square. Kirtipur, once an independent ancient kingdom, now forms part of the greater Kathmandu area, retaining its historic charm and cultural richness. Visitors can explore ancient temples, traditional houses, and narrow cobbled streets while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This journey allows travelers to connect with the deep-rooted heritage of the Newar people, appreciate their architectural brilliance, and experience the vibrant life of historic towns beyond the usual tourist paths.

Thank you for a wonderful and memorable visit to Lahana Kirtipur 🤗 The food was delicious, the rice wine top quality and the atmosphere relaxed and loving. On top of that I am so impressed and deeply grateful for their entire cooperative concept and the work the collective does in the local area 🙏🏽♥️ and furthermore I had the beautiful experience of being able to acquire the beautiful Newari clothing that the staff wears🤩 thank you all for such a lovely evening ♥️♥️

On our last visit, we ordered chicken Bara and found a strand of hair. I did not think much, threw away the strand and kept eating, later I found an entire clump of hair again. I complained and they offered to another set. We visited yesterday again thinking they might have improved. Yesterday we ordered phoksho fry, while eating an insect crawled out of the red spicy achar. I complained again, they offered another set. While eating the new set I again found a strand of hair. I did not complain again but I am not visiting Newa Lahana again. Ambience is good, food is quite expensive and they need to maintain hygiene. ( If you look closer, you can see the strand of hair. )

The place has become a shadow of its former self. The ambiance is same, not much work done to increase user experience. The food really disappointed. It lacked the crisp and fresh taste. The quantity is good but the taste is not. Also, the price is tad expensive.

An easy and local restaurant with plenty of food! You sit on pillows and carpets on the floor of a covered terrace. They bring you food that u can eat with your hands but they also provide cutlery. The hosts are really nice and available. I’m vegan and they made vegan version of a traditional newari dessert, called yomari, that I wanted to taste. We ate crepes made of rice and a fried pan made of lentil! Everything was delicious.

It's a traditionally built structure showing Newari culture and is located on a hill, run by the community offering authentic Newari food. Food, service, and the view from here are fully satisfying. This community kitchen has great popularity, hasn't been changed in terms of taste or service, and looks to keep its authenticity. Great place for energising and refreshing!
