This is by far the best experience I had in crete. The extra virgin olive oil has a unique spicy taste and the fragrant stays in your mouth after tasting. The owner of the mill welcomed me with his friendly, warm, and enthusiastic introduction of his olive mill. And he gave me a 100ml extra virgin oil as a gift for me. I am touched by his generosity.

We visited in November, right in the middle of the harvest season, and it was amazing to see the entire process live. They even filled our bottles directly from the fresh, just-pressed olive oil — truly as fresh as it gets. The flavor is incredible; you can really feel the intensity and I’m sure the polyphenol levels are very high because it has that strong, peppery finish that burns your throat in the best way. I’ll be using this strictly for health, a spoon every morning. It’s too good to even waste on cooking.

Loved this authentic olive mill. We were greeted by very friendly staff and were offered a tasting of all the products (which is not just olive oil, but also honey and other delicious products). Very good prices. Very friendly hostess who is very good at English.

Melissakis Olive Mill is somewhere that I saw on Google Maps and was not mentioned in our guidebook. It was a stop-off, for us, en route to Dourakis Winery but is well worth a look. I don't think it is possible to book but there is no need. From the outside it looks like a factory or warehouse but when you pull into the gates you can see the old-fashioned methods of extracting the oil and there is an ancient olive tree, which we were told was 2,000 years old! As we walked into the mill we were met by a young man, who spoke good English and showed us a video presentation taking us from harvesting the olives to the finished product. He was very good at answering any questions we had. Following the presentation we were allowed to taste the many varieties of oil and other products made with the oil. These ranged from dressings and tapenade to cosmetics. We bought 8 varied products and the prices were very reasonable. There are no signs about the presentation, or even that there are products for sale, on the outside but I would definitely recommend a visit if you are anywhere near.
