I’m so glad we hiked the Samaria gorge! The week we were in Chania was quite rainy so we almost missed out but miraculously the gorge was re opened on our last day. Not for the unfit or faint hearted the difficulty level was medium to hard. Most of the time you’re going downhill which plays on your knees and hips after a while but once down in the valley the effort becomes much easier. But wow, we felt every one of the 15km or so for several days after. It took us 4.5 hours to complete but we were at the head of the pack and had a quick pace. I can’t imagine what summer must be like…more people and higher temps would make it quite unpleasant in comparison to the autumn conditions we were blessed with. The gorge is so pretty and it feels like you pass through multiple different landscapes along the way. Make sure you plunge into the beautiful aquamarine water at Agia Roumeli at journeys end! There’s lots of nice places to eat while you wait out the several hours until the return ferry.

This place is worth to see! It was very crowded in August and the whole route had to be walked fast because of the schedule, so this was a real sporting. There was someone near you all the Time and you couldn't get any peace. We did this in 6,5 hours with all brakes. 🗻 Take enough snacks so you have energy to hike. You can fill your water bottle in many places so you only need one bottle per person and I recommend a big bottle! Village after this gorge has good restaurants to eat and drink without forgetting the clear blue sea. Take a bathing suit and exchange clothes or even just a clean shirt with you and dive to the refreshing sea after a long walk. Feels so damn good! 🌊 Ferry ride away from this village is beautiful! Make sure you'll get on the right side of the ferry, so you'll see all the mountains.

Gorge was amazing, great views and nice weather for hiking. Was told it would take 5 hours, and that was almost exactly how long took. Ferry to Sougia was 16euro and bus was 7euro. Minus star because it was not clear which bus you were supposed to take and I got on the wrong one! Extra 3 hours and a 75euro taxi ride to get back to my car. Bus signage needs to be more clear!!!!!!!

Daphné our guide was excellent, and the trip was really good. we got to see the gorge without much difficulty and the scenery was beautiful! very good recommendation 👍

The views are absolutely stunning. The hike isn’t the easiest, but totally doable - plenty of shady spots and places to refill water along the way. On a hot day, the last couple of kilometres can feel tough, but finishing at the beach and diving straight in makes it all worth it. Highly recommend!
