The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is one of the most impressive historical engineering achievements I have ever seen, and the true wonder is not behind a ticket gate. The bridge and irrigation structures themselves are the highlight and can be accessed freely. While there is a ticket booth on site, it is for a designated viewpoint area only, and in my opinion it is not worth paying for. The real experience is walking across the bridge, standing near the water channels, and observing the system up close. What makes Dujiangyan astonishing is the sheer brilliance of its design. Built in 238 BCE, the structure still functions today without the use of dams, relying instead on clever water diversion, natural terrain, and hydraulic principles that were centuries ahead of their time. Seeing how precisely the water is split and controlled using stone, terrain, and flow direction is both humbling and inspiring. It is hard to overstate how advanced this was for its era. The engineering feels elegant rather than forceful. Instead of fighting nature, the system works with it, protecting the surrounding region from flooding while providing irrigation that has supported agriculture for over two thousand years. Standing there, it is impossible not to respect the intelligence and foresight behind the design. I highly recommend visiting after 4pm. The area comes alive in the late afternoon and early evening with plenty of restaurants, food stalls, and vendors selling local snacks and souvenirs. It is a great time to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere without the midday crowds. Overall, Dujiangyan is not just a historical site, it is a living lesson in sustainable engineering. The fact that a structure designed over 2,200 years ago is still in use today makes it one of the most remarkable places to visit in China.

Check out the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (都江堰), a 2,000-year-old engineering masterpiece still in use today. Commissioned by King Zhao of Qin (秦昭襄王) and designed by Governor Li Bing (李冰), this dam-free system transformed Sichuan into the "Land of Abundance" (天府之国). Some really interesting features include the Fish Mouth Levee (鱼嘴), which cleverly splits the Min River and the Bottle-Neck Channel (宝瓶口), carved through rock using ancient fire-and-water techniques. Groundbreaking for its "automatic" flood control and irrigation, it’s a must-visit UNESCO site. As we were keen to understand the hydrological features of the irrigation system, we hired an English speaking guide to take us around.

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System near Chengdu is a must-see UNESCO World Heritage site and a profound demonstration of ancient Chinese ingenuity. Built around 256 BCE during the Warring States period, it showcases incredible engineering skills that solved the dual problem of flooding and drought. The most astonishing fact is its longevity: the system is still in use today, operating flawlessly for over two millennia to irrigate more than 670,000 hectares of farmland. Its design relies on key structures—the Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui), Flying Sand Weir (Feishayan), and Bottle-Neck Channel (Baopingkou)—to regulate water and sediment without a single dam.

2000 years old dam to control flood and is still working as per design. Nice scenery with an ancient temple. Worth a visit. Best to engage a guide to explain the history of the place.

Definitely worth the visit! It's a nice day trip from Chengdu. Beautiful nature, temples and an amazing padoga on the top of the hill with a great view. When you get to the top floor, you can buy the traditional red ribbon, tie to a big bell and ring it. The old town is cute for a little stroll and a bite.
