What a beautiful gem! Everything about this place is 10/10. The rooms are spacious, the buffet is delicious, and all staff are so friendly! Oubaai is beautifully located centrally to both Herolds Bay and George central. If you have the chance, ask to go see the country club - the view is unbeatable.

This hotel clearly used to be something special. You can still see it in the entrance area, which looks welcoming and reasonably well kept. The rooms are also spacious, the beds are comfortable, and the shower is genuinely good. Credit where it’s due: staying here is not unpleasant. That said, the problems start once you look beyond the surface. The rooms feel stuck in the past. The TVs are well over ten years old, limited to basic DStv, with visible cables hanging around. Doors don’t lock properly and clearly need maintenance. The buildings themselves are tired — peeling paint, general wear and tear, and an overall lack of upkeep that’s impossible to ignore. Even the details disappoint: porter trolleys are old and squeaky, breakfast is average at best (not bad, but nothing close to what you’d expect at this price point), and while pool towels are available via deposit, many of them have large holes. That’s simply unacceptable. This is not a bad hotel — but it is wildly overpriced. At around €200 per night, it does not come close to justifying the cost, nor does it meet four-star standards by South African benchmarks. With proper maintenance and investment, it could regain its former status. As it stands, you’re paying for a reputation it no longer lives up to. Bottom line: decent stay, poor value, and absolutely not a true four-star experience.

We were not happy with our experience at this course, especially considering that we paid about R1,000 more per two-ball compared to other golf courses in the surrounding area. There were no marshals on the course, which resulted in very slow play. The pace of play was not managed at all, and we were constantly waiting for the group in front of us. The bunkers had no sand and were rock solid, making them extremely difficult to play out of and not up to an acceptable standard. The golf carts were also not up to standard, and for the price we paid for the carts, they were very expensive and did not justify the cost. For the overall price we paid, the experience did not meet expectations, and we do not think we will return at this price level.

We stayed at Oubaai Hotel Resort on New Year’s Eve and booked the New Year’s Eve buffet, which cost R800 per person. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst dining and overall hotel experiences we have had. From the very start, service at the buffet was extremely slow. The starters took a long time to arrive, with long gaps between each item. One course advertised as a lemon sorbet was essentially a slush puppy with lemon flavouring. Another was just crushed ice in a glass. This is not sorbet, especially not at this price point. Another item was a single spring roll placed on top of a martini glass. It was oily, tasted frozen, and was not enjoyable at all. At that stage, we decided not to continue with the buffet and left. At around 9.30 pm, we ordered room service instead. We ordered a pasta, a burger, and asked for two glasses of champagne so we could enjoy the New Year countdown together. The food took over an hour to arrive and was cold when it did. The champagne never arrived. Even after reminding staff, we waited another 30 to 40 minutes, only to be told that this was not something they could provide at all. This completely ruined our New Year’s Eve. Basic items like ketchup and mayonnaise were also missing, despite asking for them. To make matters worse, we were still expected to pay for the room service, which we refused due to the poor quality and service. Beyond the food and service issues, the condition of the hotel itself was also disappointing. The building is clearly not well maintained. There are visible cracks in the exterior paint and walls, as well as inside the building. Paint is peeling from the ceilings and walls, including in the rooms. Overall, the property feels tired and neglected, which does not match the pricing or expectations set by the hotel. We also complained multiple times throughout our stay, and the communication was extremely poor. Staff relied almost entirely on WhatsApp to communicate, and reception never seemed to know what was going on. Room service also appeared completely disconnected from reception. There was no coordination, no clarity, and at no point did anyone apologise for the experience or take responsibility for the issues. We raised all of this with the hotel the following day. Overall, the experience was extremely disappointing and far below what is acceptable for the price. We would not return and would not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially for special occasions.

Extremely Disappointing Stay – Never Again The only positive thing about Oubaai Hotel is its proximity to the beach. Beyond that, everything else fell far below acceptable standards. The rooms are poorly maintained, and cleanliness is practically nonexistent. There was no proper room service throughout our six‑day stay. On the very first day, I requested a shower towel and no one ever came. I ended up drying myself with two used hand towels. Even after reporting this to reception, nothing was done. My kids also found no towels in their rooms, and my wife’s request for foam pillows only arrived the following day. I tried to use the bath, brown water fill the tub. Basic service failures aside, the hotel is also poorly managed at the entrance. One evening I was made to wait 15 minutes at security, only for the guard to eventually lift the barrier without explanation. Every other day we waited at least 5 minutes just to enter or exit the property. Breakfast was another disappointment, offering a very small and low‑quality selection of food. And despite the hotel’s location, all other activities or attractions are a 15–30 minute drive away. Overall, this was a very, very disappointing experience for my family and me. We will not be returning.
