It's one of the oldest Shiva Temple in India. Don't miss this Temple in Temple city of Bhubaneswar. The temple surrounding area is peaceful. You may have to wait some time for darshan if you are going on weekend or Monday or Public Holidays. Rest of the days it's not too crowded. Enough parking available for vehicles. Mobile and leather items are prohibited inside ,so plan accordingly.

Visited on today morning. Due to new years it was very crowded. However darshan was completed within one hour. Huge parking space for all types of vehicles and well managed crowd. The Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar is special for its ancient Kalinga architecture, massive scale of 180ft tower and spiritual significance as a major Shiva shrine, uniquely housing a combined form of Shiva and Vishnu . It is one of the city's oldest and largest temples, attracting huge crowds during Shivaratri. Its complex design, with four interconnected halls and intricate carvings, embodies Odisha's rich cultural heritage.

The temple is said to have been built in the 11th century BCE in classic Kalinga architectural style, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The structure is undeniably beautiful, with intricate detailing and several smaller temples dedicated to Parvati, Vishnu, and other deities. However, we were surprised to see a board stating that only “orthodox Hindus” are allowed. Perhaps “practising Hindus” would be a more appropriate phrase, as the concept of “orthodox” doesn’t really exist in Sanatan Dharma. Entry requires showing an Aadhaar card to verify religion. The atmosphere around the entrance felt similar to Jagannath Puri, with some pandas (priests) approaching visitors like hawkers to guide them inside the complex. Because the overall vibe didn’t feel very inviting, we chose to view the temple from outside. It remains an impressive architectural site nonetheless. Near the North Gate, you can climb a short flight of steps for an elevated vantage point, which allows you to photograph the temple—since photography is not allowed inside. Before entering, visitors must deposit bags, mobile phones, and shoes. Despite the mixed experience, the temple’s historical and architectural significance is undeniable.

Lingaraj Temple is one of the most beautiful and sacred temples in Bhubaneswar. The architecture is stunning and truly reflects the rich Kalinga heritage. The entire temple complex is peaceful, clean, and well-organized. The darshan feels very divine, especially early in the morning. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside, but the outer area is also very nice. A must-visit place for anyone coming to Bhubaneswar.

I visited the Lingaraj Temple on 21st November, and the experience was truly divine and memorable. The moment you enter the temple complex, you can feel the spiritual energy and the ancient charm that makes this place one of the most sacred temples in Odisha. The temple’s architecture is breathtaking — built in the classic Kalinga style, the towering structure and the detailed stone carvings instantly capture your attention. Every corner of the temple reflects centuries of devotion and traditional craftsmanship. The main shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva (as Lingaraja) is powerful and peaceful at the same time, and standing before the Shivalinga gives a deep sense of calm and positivity. The temple premises are quite large, with many smaller shrines inside the complex. Despite its age, the temple is well-maintained, and the movement of devotees is organized. There is a strict no-mobile and no-camera policy, which helps maintain the serenity inside. I was able to complete my darshan smoothly, and the priests were helpful in guiding visitors. The whole atmosphere — the chants, bells, and the sight of the ancient stone structures — makes the visit feel spiritually uplifting. Overall, Lingaraj Temple is a must-visit for anyone coming to Bhubaneswar, whether for faith, history, or architecture. My visit on 21st November was peaceful, meaningful, and truly unforgettable. Highly recommended for spiritual seekers and heritage lovers.
