This incredible journey begins as you leave the fertile Lerma Valley behind and ascend through the scenic Escoipe Ravine. The adventure continues through the impressive Cuesta del Obispo and Valle Encantado, where the towering mountains envelop you in their majestic beauty. Along the way, you'll pass through the Piedra del Molino, standing at an altitude of 3,400 meters, before entering Los Cardones National Park. This park is unique as Argentina’s only high-altitude national park, home to spectacular landscapes and diverse wildlife.
The tour reaches the magical town of Cachi, nestled at the foot of the snow-capped Cachi Mountain, which rises to 6,320 meters above sea level. This charming town is renowned for its colonial-style architecture, with mansions that line the narrow cobblestone streets. The route also covers key highlights such as the Calchaquí Valley, El Carril, the technical stop at El Maray, and the picturesque Tin Tin Straight, which stretches for 11 km and was originally traced by the Incas. You’ll have two free hours to explore Cachi before returning to Salta. The total journey covers 320 kilometers and offers breathtaking views at every turn, making it a truly unforgettable experience.

Ancient Pre-Columbian Route: The park lies along El Camino Inca, part of the ancient Inca road system that once connected parts of Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia. These roads were used by indigenous cultures for trade and communication long before Spanish colonization. Fossilized Forest: Hidden within the park are petrified tree trunks from over 70 million years ago, dating back to the Cretaceous period. This fossilized forest tells a story of when this area was much wetter and forested—quite different from its current desert-like appearance. Ghost Stories: Some local guides whisper about mysterious lights and ghostly figures seen in the vast desert expanses at night. These stories add an eerie, mystical aura to the otherwise serene environment.

Just gorgeous - the guidebook had it as a must see - and it truly is! It may ”only“ be a somewhat barren area studded with large cacti - but the views of this vast landscape are absolutely impressive!

Beautiful park that offers a landscape similar to those of Arizona and New Mexico but sooo much better because of the staggering number of cactuses (and they're so big too). Photo taken by @alejandroseveriniph (Instagram)

The park himself is protected but is not exceptional because you can see many places with more cactus than here. But after the park, in the direction of Salta, there are very beautiful views with green mountains and red rocks, it's amazing ! Many indigenous people send goat cheese, artisanal stuff... And you can see guanacos in the park!

Simply outstanding! We were lucky to have such good weather. The place is naturally quite and offers an environment free from any sort of pollution. There are also cute artisanal tents selling handicrafts and deli. You can get free tasting of goat cheese and llama salami... delicious. It's nice to buy from there to support these people.
