If you are interested in history and feel a deep connection to the past, this will definitely make you connect to the past. Standing on the borders of some if the fields, gave me chills. Taking deep breathes and feeling the wind brush over my skin, helped me visualize this significant battle.

A Truly Fascinating Experience I absolutely loved my visit to Vicksburg National Military Park! This place is incredibly well-preserved and packed with history, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the significance of the Vicksburg Campaign. The exhibits are outstanding—especially the USS Cairo gunboat. Seeing the massive cannons, the restored machinery, and the intricate structure of the ironclad up close was truly fascinating. The interpretive signs do a great job of explaining how everything worked, and it’s amazing to think about the engineering and manpower behind it all. The monuments throughout the park are beautiful and powerful, and each stop helped bring the story of the siege to life. The Shirley House, the Wisconsin Monument, the rolling landscape—everything is so thoughtfully preserved. It’s a peaceful, scenic, and educational experience all in one. If you enjoy history, nature, or simply exploring meaningful places, this park is a must-visit. Highly recommend!

I visited on a 92 degree summer day. I was able to see most of the battlefield from the car but there are several critical areas from the battle and statues that you should get out and see. The movie at the visitors center gives you a good overview.

Going to Vicksburg I didn’t know what to expect. I was met with friendly people as well as a wealth of knowledge and history. Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay and explore this park as much or as in depth as I would have liked but what we saw was great. We watched the video in the visitors center first then went on the drive. I appreciated that everything was color coded…made it easy to know what was what. The Illinois monument was incredible. I would definitely visit this again and spend more time here if we drive through this area again.
