Ayutthaya was founded around 1350 and became the second capital of Siam after Sukhothai. Thanks to its strategic location between China India and the Malay Archipelago it grew into one of the world’s most important trading centers. By the year 1700 Ayutthaya was considered the largest city on earth with nearly one million residents. Merchants from Europe the Arab world China India Japan and Southeast Asia traveled here for trade. European visitors described the city as magnificent filled with golden palaces grand ceremonies and busy waterways crowded with trading vessels from across the globe.
