Its breathtaking Baroque interior, richly decorated with gilded stone, elaborate chapels, and masterful craftsmanship, reflects a time when art was used not only to inspire faith, but to express power, identity, and legacy. The presence of Caravaggio’s The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist alone makes this place a pilgrimage site for art lovers, yet every detail — from the marble floor honoring fallen knights to the dramatic use of light and ornamentation, contributes to an overwhelming sense of historical depth. Walking through this cathedral, I felt genuine awe and deep respect for the cultural layers preserved within its walls. A truly unforgettable experience and an essential visit for anyone passionate about art, history, and European heritage.
In my opinion, St John’s Co-Cathedral is an unmissable stop when visiting Malta’s capital. The site is very well managed, with several guided path options that help visitors fully understand and appreciate what they are about to see. That said, I find the €15 entrance fee quite high. It inevitably limits access to works of such beauty, especially when considering families or groups who have to multiply that cost. The true highlight of the cathedral is undoubtedly the 2 Caravaggio paintings, which are excellently displayed. The visual and interactive paths designed around them are well thought out and genuinely engaging. Beyond Caravaggio, there are also many other works of great artistic value, including impressive pieces by Mattia Preti. I strongly recommend visiting this place. At the same time, I would encourage the management to reconsider the ticket pricing, in order to make the experience of such extraordinary beauty more accessible to everyone.
St. John's Co-Cathedral is majestic! Make sure to not miss it when visiting Valetta. The ticket costs 15€ and, honestly, I would have paid even more because the experience is completely wort it. The cathedral is huge and I would say it's more like a musem than just a cathedral. You can see famous Caravaggio paintings, there is even a immersive Caravaggio exhibition where you can learn more about how he painted all of the details. All art history geeks will love this place. We visited on a Friday (December 2025) and didn't book tickets in advance but that wasn't a problem. There was a small queue but it moved quickly. However, I would recommend getting the tickets online for summer months.
