Visiting Ostia Antica felt like stepping quietly into the everyday life of ancient Rome. Unlike the grandeur of the Colosseum or the Forum, this place speaks softly — and that is exactly what makes it so powerful. From the moment I walked through the ancient gate, I felt as if time had gently stepped aside. The streets are still clearly visible, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. I walked along stone roads, past old apartment buildings (insulae), bakeries, baths, and taverns, imagining ordinary people going about their daily lives. What amazed me most was how complete the city feels — mosaics on the floors, faded frescoes on the walls, and even ancient shops still recognizable. One of the most striking moments was standing in the ancient theater, looking out over the ruins in complete silence. No crowds, no noise — just wind, birds, and history. It felt deeply personal, as if the city was revealing itself only to those willing to walk slowly and listen. The atmosphere of Ostia Antica is calm, open, and almost meditative. Nature has gently wrapped itself around the ruins — grass, trees, and sunlight soften the stone and create a feeling of peaceful coexistence between past and present. Recommendations for future visitors: Give yourself at least 3–4 hours; this site is large and deserves time. Wear comfortable walking shoes — the stone streets are uneven. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer visitors. Bring water and take breaks — there are many quiet places to sit. Walk slowly and let your imagination fill in the spaces. I left Ostia Antica feeling deeply moved and unexpectedly peaceful. This place doesn’t impress with drama — it touches you with authenticity. If you want to understand how ancient Romans truly lived, not just how they ruled, Ostia Antica is unforgettable and absolutely worth the visit.

Well preserved ancient city and wasn't crowded at all. It's outside the city, but worth the trip if you're looking to escape rome for a few hours. Short drive from the airport if you're looking for a layover activity, or something to do after a morning arrival before afternoon hotel check in.

Really reccomamded!! You dive into 2000 years ago in a magical Roman Empire contest. The beauty of Roman architecture, houses, roads, harbour, thermal areas, theatre, markets. Simply beautiful. The Park is in perfect condition. A big Parking available. I reccomand to book a guide. (Sinopie).

A must see for any fans of ancient Rome (or ancient cities in general). You can see most of it within a day, but expect quite a bit of walking. There are toilets and fresh water points available throughout the site. Near the museum, in the norther part of the city, you can also get something to eat. The entry costs 18euro, but certain groups are eligible for a free entry. The audio guide, costs additional 7euro, but I wouldn't say it is super necessary. It gives some additional information, but there are multiple signs, both in Italian and English, across the site, that explain pretty well what you are looking at. Just be sure to get the map of the site beforehand to plan your route! Everything was giving me similar vibes as when visiting Pompei. Some things might be better preserved there, but Ostia is much more friendly to visit without a guide.

Great ancient place without the crowds and pleasant escape from the city of Rome. It is a marvelous example of the whole port of Ostia that existed here 2700 years ago. Definitely worth it and it’s free. You have to book the tickets online if you travel with a school and show a letter of the school with children personal data and the signature of the director of the school. It takes 2-3 hours minimum of the sightseeing, so take that into account. There is a cafe and a gift shop inside the ancient ruins 😊
