Zaanse Schans, a charming village just outside the city. A beautiful open-air museum, which truly feels like stepping back in time. The highlight, of course, was the iconic Dutch windmills, some of which are still operational. Watching them slowly turn against the backdrop of the Zaan River was a picture-perfect moment. Apart from the windmills, I enjoyed strolling along the traditional wooden houses, cheese shops, and the little craft workshops that showcase Dutch heritage. The air smelled faintly of freshly baked stroopwafels, and I couldn’t resist tasting a few local specialties. Zaanse Schans was such a refreshing escape from the city’s buzz – peaceful, photogenic, and full of history. If you have a spare few hours in Amsterdam before a flight or between plans, this place is absolutely worth it. 🌿🌬️

We had a lovely cold and partly sunny day here. It’s a large museum with working windmills and museum exhibits. A couple of nice restaurant/bars for something to eat. We walked back from the Mill museum through the fields.

The Netherlands is famous for windmills, so this place is a must-visit. But also because of this, expect a large crowd of tourists here arrving by bus. Overall an interesting place to check out the windmills, learn about the history of the town, wooden shoes and cheese. The village is free to visit but tickets are required for entry to the museums and windmills.

Visited Zaanse Schans today and absolutely loved the experience! The place feels like stepping into a living postcard — traditional windmills, charming wooden houses, and stunning views everywhere. The area is very well-maintained and perfect for a relaxed walk, photography, and learning about Dutch culture and craftsmanship. There are nice small museums, cheese shops, and demonstrations that make the visit even more enjoyable. It’s easily reachable from Amsterdam and a great half-day trip. Highly recommend visiting if you want to experience the classic Dutch countryside vibe! 🌿🌬️🇳🇱

As a free tourist attraction, Zaanse Schans is very good place to explore. There is ticket only if you want to go inside the windmill. Apart from this, there is Clog making demo, Dutch cheese tasting, exploring the iconic windmills and photo opportunities to capture the overall Dutch ambience. I really enjoyed the clog demo how using pre-set machines clogs were made. Windmills were fun too. Overall a good place to spend half day.
