Perched high in the mountains of São Miguel, the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel stands like a forgotten giant—surrounded by misty forests and overlooking the breathtaking volcanic lakes of Sete Cidades. What was once meant to be a modern luxury hotel has now transformed into one of the island’s most mysterious lost places. Its crumbling halls and quiet, eerie atmosphere make it feel both haunting and mesmerizing at the same time—a true ghost of Azorean history.

An enormous abandoned hotel on a high point overlooking Sete Citades and the beautiful twins lakes. The hotel was built in the 1990s but clearly was over ambitious and fell into disuse some time ago. You can reach roof level and take spectacular photos of the lakes and surroundings (if the mist has lifted!) which makes the effort worthwhile.

Very interesting place to visit. Located at a scenic location above site cidades. The hotel is completely abandoned and is super interesting to walk through the ruins of what was once a 5 star hotel. It made for some real creepy pictures and the vibe there was spooky. Its certainly a must visit but please be careful it was raining and very slippy when we went so I wouldn't recommend going very high if so. If you have kids I would certainly recommend you dont or maybe just explore the lower levels but take great caution before entering. Views from outside are just as amazing with trails down to the town.

Amazing! Loved that everyone was standing at the observational platform across the street, while there was a way better view from the roof of the old hotel! For some reason there were barely tourists going inside. Amazing place to visit, it looks straight out of a post-apocalyptic movie! I stayed for over an hour exploring. The main entrance hall is already breathtaking. All the rooms on the different floors aren't that different from eachother, but there's hidden gems to discover. The rooftop view was the best, even on a very cloudy day. It's easy accesible, only one high step to get to the roof, otherwise it's all very accessible through staircases. The floor's dirty/wet/mouldy/muddy at lots of places, so appropriate shoes are recommended. Parking can get hectic starting from 10-11am.

Amazing location! If you arrive before 9.00/9.30, you still get to enjoy this property with almost no tourists. The place it’s amazing for the view , very easy to go in and get to the roof. Wouldn’t recommend staying the night in this hotel tho 😜
