The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is a magnificent Romanesque masterpiece in northwestern Spain and the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, it houses the relics of Saint James and features a richly decorated Baroque façade and impressive medieval interiors. To reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was one of my dreams.

Rooftop & tower experience was unique and amazing. We booked the full package that includes the museum visit as well. Selected 10am entry on a weekday - small/no crowds and great timing to attend the noon time mass after the tour. The plaza gets very crowded and the line to get into the main cathedral gets long in the afternoon.

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela – Santiago, Spain. The Cathedral is believed to house the tomb of Saint James the Greater, making it a major site for Christian pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. It is a masterpiece of architecture, with a Romanesque core that incorporates various later styles, and features significant artworks like the Pórtico da Gloria and the large Botafumeiro. The cathedral, along with its Old Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. For many, the cathedral symbolizes faith, endurance, and a sense of accomplishment after completing the long pilgrimage route.

The cathedral marks the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and is believed to house the remains of Saint James, one of Jesus’s apostles. Construction began in 1075 and was completed in 1211, with major renovations from the 16th to the 18th centuries that blended Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles into a single monumental structure. Pilgrims traditionally finish their journey by giving a gentle embrace to the back of Saint James’s statue inside the cathedral. One of its most famous features is the Botafumeiro, the world’s largest censer, which swings dramatically from the ceiling during special masses and on the Feast of Saint James (July 25), symbolizing the purification of the sacred space. The main cathedral is free to enter, while access to the museum, roof, and towers requires a ticket. The Pórtico de la Gloria, a Romanesque masterpiece completed by Maestro Mateo in 1188, can be reached through the museum entrance.

It rained excessively until we reached Santiago de Compostela and the heavens parted and the sun shown through a blue sky scattered with clouds. It was all that was needed to make the day here complete. The guide Diogo and his driver were perfect. Diogo provided excellent information to satisfy and was always open for questions and deeper insight to our destinations.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is definitely a special place. People from all over the world come here after days—or even weeks—of exhaustion and devotion. Standing in the main square, you can see countless pilgrims celebrating their incredible accomplishments. The cathedral itself is stunning. Interestingly, some parts are built in the Manueline style, giving it a unique character. The main altar is breathtaking, but for me, the most memorable part was the fragrance that fills the space—a rich blend of myrrh and incense that stays with you long after you leave. This is absolutely worth a visit if you’re in Galicia. I came as part of a tour, but even though I’m not religious, I would love to walk the Camino someday.
