Explore the Historic Coastal Towns and Ancient Cave Art of Western Cantabria on a Day Tour

This tour offers a deep dive into the historical and cultural richness of western Cantabria, visiting some of the most significant towns along the coast. Your journey begins in San Vicente de la Barquera, a town defined by its stunning bay, estuaries, and a historical complex that reflects its maritime importance. The scenic beauty of this area, combined with its medieval heritage, provides a perfect introduction to the unique character of the Cantabrian coastline and its long-standing traditions.

Continuing along the coast, you will visit Comillas, a town celebrated for its elegant modernist architecture. The influence of visionary architects is evident throughout the streets, with buildings that stand as masterpieces of design and creativity. An optional visit to the Capricho de GaudĂ allows you to see one of the most famous examples of this style, showcasing the intricate details and artistic flair that make Comillas a must-see destination for architecture enthusiasts and casual travelers alike.

The tour then takes you to the medieval town of Santillana del Mar, often referred to as the town of three lies because it is neither holy, flat, nor by the sea. Despite its name, it is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved medieval towns in Spain. Walking through its cobbled streets, you will be surrounded by stone buildings, historic towers, and a timeless atmosphere that transports you back to the Middle Ages, offering a truly immersive historical experience.

The grand finale of the tour is a visit to the Altamira neocave, an exact replica of the original cave that houses world-famous prehistoric paintings. Declared a World Heritage site in 1985, the original cave is a treasure of human history. The neocave provides a detailed and accurate look at these magnificent artworks, allowing you to appreciate the skill of our ancestors in a setting that respects the preservation of the original site. This tour is a complete cultural journey.

The visit to the caves in Cantabria was an amazing experience. The transportation with pick up was really convenient and comfortable. Our guide Jairo was excellent — his English was perfect, he was very friendly, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable, which made the visit even more interesting. The small group size (only four of us) made the experience feel personal and relaxed, especially inside the caves. Seeing the Paleolithic paintings up close, in their original setting, was truly impressive. On the flip side, timings seemed a bit off as we had a 1+ hour wait before the first visit, so we could have probably met a bit later in the morning. I’m not sure how to qualify it as value for money cause I don’t know the cost of the tickets for the caves. It does seem on the expensive side but I couldn’t fully confirm.

Jairo Abajo Pardo was our driver and tour guide and was kind, gracious, and professional. He was knowledgeable about the caves and was attentive and personable. He even gave us an excellent recommendation for lunch. Thank you for a pleasant afternoon touring the caves Jairo!

I took the day tour with this company to see the Castillo caves, with some of the Paleolithic paintings dating back to 40,000 years ago. You are in great hands with Exploring Cantabria and I can’t recommend them enough! They personalize your small group tour (there were 3 of us) and share so much knowledge and the stories that swirl around these cave discoveries. It is an absolute privilege to take this tour with such warm, gracious and informative people and I can say with all honesty, it is the best day tour I have ever been on! It is a once in a lifetime experience and I’m still buzzing from the experience!
