If you’re deciding whether to visit Herculaneum / Pompeii with Paolo or to join one of those big tour groups, I say absolutely 1000% go with Paolo and do both sites if you can. We’ve done many types of tours in the past and this one was hands down the best one, thanks to his incredible knowledge of the sites, historical context, and passion for archaeology. We got so much out of the day that we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise with a bigger group or on our own due to his unique perspective as a native of the region and the opportunity to ask many many specific questions. My husband and I (plus our small dog) spent about six hours with Paolo and learned so much about the history, art, and society of the two sites, and going to both allowed for both a broader and more-depth view of ancient Roman life. Truly one of our most interesting travel days ever!
Paolo was an outstanding guide for the limited time we had to spend in Pompeii and Herculaneum.
