Black Canyon is one of the most beautiful natural places near Almaty. It is located on the way to Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lake, so you can easily cover all these places in one day if you plan well. Although it is far from the city, the journey is totally worth it. The canyon looks like the earth is divided into two parts, with a beautiful river flowing in between. The contrast of the dark rocks and the river creates an amazing view. Reaching close to the river is difficult and not recommended, as it can be dangerous. The best views are from the top, where the scenery looks absolutely stunning. If you are planning an Almaty tour, Black Canyon is a must-visit place for nature lovers. 🌄

The Black Canyon near Almaty is a nice short stop on the way to Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes. Our tour guide stopped here briefly, and it turned out to be a refreshing break with stunning views of rugged cliffs and a winding river below. The contrast of dark rocks against the blue sky makes it a great spot for quick photos, especially when the sunlight hits the canyon walls. Though it’s not the main highlight compared to the breathtaking Kolsai or the mysterious Kaindy Lake, the Black Canyon adds a pleasant touch to the journey. It’s perfect for a short rest and a glimpse of Kazakhstan’s wild beauty before continuing the scenic drive through the Tien Shan region.
