Pōhatu and Flea Bay are located within a historic working sheep and cattle farm, first established in 1843 as the earliest official farm on Banks Peninsula. When the Helps family arrived in the early nineteen seventies, they discovered that the land was also home to the rare White Flippered Penguin, a unique Canterbury variety of the Little Penguin. Since then, the area has become closely associated with protecting and preserving this special wildlife species.
