You will begin your experience with a hotel pickup by your driver, who will take you to the workshop location based on your hotel’s location. Upon arrival, you will have the opportunity to learn about Ngoma, a vibrant and traditional aspect of Zanzibar’s music and culture. Ngoma is not only the name of a traditional drum but also represents a captivating genre of dance music that has been passed down through generations. The workshop provides a hands-on experience where you can explore the rhythms, movements, and cultural significance of Ngoma, gaining a deeper understanding of its role in the island’s heritage. Participants can engage with the instruments, observe demonstrations, and learn about the history and meaning behind this expressive form of music and dance.

One particularly notable style introduced in the workshop is Msewe, which originates from Pemba Island. This style is deeply spiritual and is often performed to honor and evoke ancestral spirits. During the performance, dancers wear shakers tied around their ankles, adding to the rich and mesmerizing rhythmic patterns that characterize Msewe. The combination of drumbeats, movement, and shakers creates an immersive experience that highlights the unique cultural traditions of Zanzibar. By the end of the workshop, you will have gained insight into the artistry, rhythm, and significance of Ngoma and its different styles. After this enriching and educational experience, your driver will transport you back to your hotel, allowing you to reflect on the music, dance, and cultural heritage you have explored. This workshop provides a memorable opportunity to connect with Zanzibar’s traditions in an interactive and engaging way.

Took part in the excellent banana leaf workshop delivered by Mr Hussein after speaking to Muna who described the Kanga Project and what it means to the community, how it came about, and their vision. The workshop itself was fun, lighthearted and joyful as we were guided on how to create an iconic Zanzibar scene of a fishing boat out at sea using dried banana leaf, and layering up to build the final picture.

The Kanga Project is doing meaningful work in Zanzibar. They support local women, preserve our culture, and create real opportunities for small businesses. Their impact is clear and the team is dedicated. A beautiful project with a good purpose. Naipongeza sana.

I spent a rich morning with The Kanga Project in Stonetown. I got to learn and see how ukindu material baskets are made. I was even able to make the handle— very intricate work. I sat with one of the Mama’s from the village and we shared stories, laughed, and I got a good glimpse of the time and care that goes into crafts across Tanzania. It felt authentic, hands-on, and rooted in community. I highly recommend if you want to experience local culture in a meaningful way.
