The bright Icelandic summer nights are the perfect time to see Arctic Foxes in their natural habitat. During the day, the foxes stay in and around their dens, but at night they become more active and visible. Young pups often play outside the dens while their parents hunt in the mountains or along the beach. Kviar Lodge, an old farmhouse in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, sits alone in a wild and remote area. After the local people abandoned the region in 1948 along with their livestock, Arctic Foxes became the only remaining land mammals. For more than sixty years, they have roamed the fjords and bays freely, becoming tame and playful due to the lack of human disturbance. Guests have the unique opportunity to spend a night in this historical house during the summer, experiencing the midnight sun and enjoying the untouched natural surroundings while observing the foxes in their natural environment.
This trip offers a flexible and immersive experience, combining wildlife observation with outdoor activities. Hiking in the mountains surrounding Kviar Lodge provides spectacular panoramic views, while guided kayak tours allow visitors to explore the untouched coastline of the remote area. Alternatively, guests can relax in the long grass with a book while keeping an eye out for the foxes. Summer is the Arctic Foxes breeding season, so we follow strict guidelines and keep our distance to respect their natural behavior. Staying at Kviar Lodge allows visitors to feel the history of Hornstrandir, connect with nature, and witness a rare opportunity to see Arctic Foxes up close while enjoying the freedom and serenity of one of Iceland's most remote and beautiful regions.
