As a rule of thumb, wherever we travel, we tend to use the hop-on, hop-off service, it’s usually the best way to get a sense of the city, its history, and its key landmarks. Beyond the convenience of transportation, the real value typically lies in the commentary and context provided along the route. While we’ve had excellent experiences with Big Bus in other cities, the Big Bus in Budapest fell short in terms of the quality of its commentary. The information shared was very basic and lacked depth, missing many interesting historical and cultural insights that we later discovered through a walking tour and some additional research. That said, we chose the 48-hour option, and it was still very useful for getting around and covering the sites we wanted to see without hassle. Plus, this particular package included two additional experiences that are not always bundled together elsewhere: a walking tour and a Danube cruise. Both were excellent — especially the cruise — and were absolutely worth it.

If you value your time or your money, I strongly advise against booking this particular activity. I've generally been resistant to hop-on hop-off tours, viewing them as a kind of 'lazy' tourism. However, the weather was quite poor, and we chose to book the 24-hour Big Bus package (which included the Danube River Cruise and a walking tour) as a way to see the city comfortably despite the cold and rain. This decision, unfortunately, ended up costing us more in wasted time than it saved in convenience. The experience was a logistical nightmare, primarily centered around the included walking tour. The promotional materials advertised this feature, but the execution was a constant stream of misinformation. We initially checked the app, which noted the walking tour started at 11:00 AM. We rushed to the stop only to be told by a Big Bus employee that the correct start time was actually 1:00 PM. We adjusted our plans and returned by 1:00 PM, only to be told the time had been changed again to 3:00 PM and was now starting at a completely different stop. We moved to the third location, and when we arrived, the staff there directed us to yet another incorrect meeting point. Even the employees were confused, admitting that the app and internal communications had the wrong times. Moving all over the city chasing this elusive walking tour completely negated any perceived benefit of the hop-on service and ate up several crucial hours of our 24-hour pass. To make matters worse, the whole reason we booked this bus tour was to find comfortable shelter from the poor weather. Despite this, they directed us onto an open-top, roofless bus when the temperature was hovering near 3 degrees Celsius. It was absolutely freezing and completely defeated the purpose of booking the bus in the first place. This was a critical failure in operational planning and customer care. After the third time an employee directed me to the wrong spot for the walking tour, I was completely exhausted and frustrated. I decided to immediately hop off the bus and cut my losses. At that point, I abandoned the included Danube River Cruise ticket entirely. I simply did not want to deal with Big Bus Tours staff or logistics again; I just wanted to get out of their way and salvage whatever little time I had left to enjoy Budapest on my own terms. The ultimate outcome was a significant loss of both time and money. I wasted hours chasing ghost tours, missed out on activities I truly wanted to do, and was unnecessarily exposed to terrible weather—all because of the operational failures and complete lack of organization from Big Bus Budapest. Do not book this activity. If you value your time or your money, avoid the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off tour in Budapest. What should have been a convenient way to see the city in poor weather turned into the worst part of our day. The product promised (multiple tours and sheltered transport) was not delivered, and the company’s internal confusion actively ruined a large portion of our trip.

We were very pleased with the bus trip. In one day we were able to see all the major sights. And the inclusion of a boat trip and a guided tour makes the service extremely attractive.

We took the bus on a rainy day. The upper deck was open, so we couldn’t go upstairs. The lower deck was completely full of people, yet they kept selling tickets. The audio guide was terrible, and everything was soaking wet! Taking the bus is really not a good idea 😡

Good way to get around and see a lot in a short time. Buses and staff are good and it's easy to use the app. No need to book in advance, buy a ticket at your closest stop and get on. Easy.
