Lovrjenac Fortress (Fort Lovrjenac) - Dubrovnik's Dramatic Guardian Perched on a sheer 37-metre rock just outside Pile Gate, this mighty 11th-century fortress (often called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar") offers the most breathtaking panoramic views of the red rooftops, city walls, and endless Adriatic you'll find anywhere. Legend says the people of Ragusa built it in just three months to stop the Venetians from taking the spot -- and the inscription above the entrance still reads "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" (Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world). Inside, the triangular courtyard and tiny chapel feel pure Game of Thrones (it was the Red Keep in KIng's Landing), and summer evenings bring unforgettable theatre performances of Hamlet on the upper terraces. Climb the steep steps for sunset --the light turning the sea molten gold is unforgettable. €15 entry or included in the City Walls ticket. Bring water, wear good shoes, and prepare to be blown away. Best view in Dubrovnik, hands down.
I’m glad it was part of the Dubrovnik pass or I might not have gone in! The walk there down by the water and up the stairs is very lovely. Everywhere you turn it is picturesque! The fortress was the scene of many GOT scenes and since I am a fan I found it interesting but even if you have never seen the show the views are spectacular!!!
A lot of Game of Thrones scenes were taken here! Truly magical ❤️ we went here end October to November, it’s low season and it’s the best way to enjoy Dubrovnik in general. Less crowded and still the weather is good!
