The deep-sea fishing off Ireland's west coast is renowned as some of the best in Europe, offering an exciting opportunity to catch a wide variety of species. The waters are home to large populations of tuna, mackerel, and sharks, making it an ideal location for fishing enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you are a novice or an expert, you'll have the chance to reel in over a dozen different species during your trip. While you fish, you'll also have the chance to spot remarkable marine life, including basking sharks, dolphins, seals, and even orca. The beautiful coastal scenery of Clifden’s offshore islands adds to the experience, with some islands featuring ancient ruins visible only from the water.
On the fishing trip, you will board a boat in Cleggan and meet your skipper, who will provide a briefing on the day’s itinerary and equipment. Once on the water, the boat will drift over reefs, where you'll be casting while anchored. These waters, ranging from 50 to 330 feet deep, are home to a variety of fish species, including ling, cod, coalfish, wrasse, and mackerel. Pollack are often caught using red gill lures and lead heads, providing an exciting fight as they average 5+ lbs, with some exceeding 10 lbs. Cod are abundant in the summer, with average catches ranging between 10 to 15 lbs, and schools of coalfish can range from smaller 1 lb fish to large adults weighing over 10 lbs. Drifting over the reefs offers the chance to catch 10 to 15 species, and adding extra bait could increase that number to 20 or more.
At the end of the day, you'll return to Cleggan with a wealth of fishing memories and a great haul. This guided trip is available for small groups, with bookings open for June, July, and August. The experience offers a fantastic mix of adventure, natural beauty, and thrilling fishing action. It is important to note that availability is subject to weather conditions, so booking in advance is recommended to ensure a spot on this exciting journey into the wild Atlantic waters.
