Cycle the scenic Great Western Greenway, a traffic-free trail that stretches along the Wild Atlantic Way from Westport to Achill Island. This world-class cycling and walking route follows the path of the former Westport to Achill railway, which closed in 1937, and is the longest off-road trail in Ireland. As you cycle, you'll pass picturesque villages, stop at local pubs, and take in famous landmarks, including the iconic Croagh Patrick. This holy pilgrim mountain rises to the south of Clew Bay, where many pilgrims once climbed barefoot to visit the tiny church at the summit.
Starting from Westport, you’ll receive a briefing before heading out to explore the 42km Greenway independently at your own pace. Along the way, you can take breaks in the charming village of Newport or enjoy a coffee or meal at one of the local cafés or pubs. As you cycle through Mulranny, admire its long beaches and stunning views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. The route also offers breathtaking views of Clew Bay's islands, with Croagh Patrick to the south and the Nephin mountain range to the north, making this ride a perfect way to experience Ireland’s dramatic coastal beauty.
