Malaga is a city with a rich history spanning over 2800 years. From the Phoenicians, who first settled here, to the Romans, Arabs, and later the Catholic Monarchs, each period has left its mark on the city. Walking through the streets of Malaga allows you to see this history reflected in its architecture, squares, and monuments. The city has evolved over the centuries, blending its historical heritage with modern life, making it a vibrant place to explore and experience. From ancient walls to contemporary shopping streets, Malaga tells the story of its past in every corner.
Our walk begins at Calle del Marqués de Larios, known simply as Calle Larios. Designed in the nineteenth century by architect Strachan, its facades reflect bourgeois style and elegance. It is the main shopping street of Malaga, lively throughout the year, and only the most exclusive businesses have rentals here. We will visit the citys most important squares and learn why the cathedral is nicknamed as it is, a clue being that it is unfinished. The cathedral also has unusual gargoyles, the story of which will be explained at the Chain Gate where remnants of the original Great Mosque can also be seen. We will pass by the Picasso Museum but will focus more on his life at Plaza de la Merced, where he grew up. Walking down Calle Granada, once the citys main street before the Alameda Principal and Calle Larios emerged, we will find the oldest church and the best local restaurants. Along the way, we will talk about Malaga customs and celebrations, including Holy Week, the August fair, and Christmas lights and concerts. We will also explain local curiosities, such as how to order coffee and the meaning of the term madwoman. This walk is a journey through history, culture, and daily life in Malaga.
