"Volunteering at Waimea Valley" is the perfect way to visit and give back! We signed up online (>get involved>volunteer) for a Sunday morning crew and spent 2-1/2 hours clearing overgrown vegetation, beautifying the garden and giving the native plants some much needed breathing space (Malama: nurture and protect). A bonus to volunteering was complimentary admission (a $25 per person value), premium, close-in parking, and beating the crazy traffic and crowds who came later in the day (and had to park much farther away!). Volunteering was "fulfilling our responsibility" (Kuleana) to the land, and a "righteous & correct" (Pono) thing to do. I learned these Hawaiian concepts and words while exploring the gardens and talking with cultural ambassadors stationed at tables throughout the gardens. Each one explained the words and concepts, and then placed a word stamp on a Waimea Valley certificate. After relaying what I'd learned to the third ambassador, he gifted me a beautiful Waimea Valley Ho'okipa Ambassador pin (an updated pin with a striking red border is coming in September - go visit again!). There is also a Luau (didn't stay for that), a gift shop, and a couple of places to eat. After exploring the gardens and Waimea Falls (which didn't allow swimming due to the lack of rain; YMMV), we enjoyed a pulled pork plate with really generous servings of pulled pork, potato salad, mixed green salad, and furikake rice; an ahi tuna burger; a chicken burger; and great fries with just the right amount of crunch. Definitely a worthwhile visit!

So many beautiful plants to see. There are a lot of different pathways to follow. Great signage to tell you what your looking at. Nice paved trail to walk on.

Waimea Botanical Garden offers a serene and tranquil experience in a lush, tropical paradise. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained gardens with labeled plants, walkways leading to gorgeous waterfalls, and the opportunity to swim in natural pools. The cultural aspect of the garden adds depth to the visit, with traditional Hawaiian structures and educational displays enriching the experience. The walk through the garden is especially delightful when the weather is pleasant, not too hot and with a gentle breeze. The paved paths make it accessible for most visitors, and the shaded areas provide relief from the sun. It's advisable to check the weather forecast before visiting, as conditions can vary. During the dry season, the waterfall may be reduced to a trickle or dry up completely. While this is a natural occurrence, it doesn't diminish the overall beauty of the garden. The surrounding flora and the peaceful ambiance make it a worthwhile visit year-round.

Absolutely beautiful and worth the drive! It was about a mile walk to the waterfall, mostly because the kids took a lot of detours to see the foliage, flowers and make crafts. Our group had 4 children, ages 2.5 to 9 and they were all able to do the entire walk without issue. They do offer shuttle service for $10 each way, but we were able to enjoy the scenery and take our time enjoying the walk (lots of shade too!). We ended the walk at the waterfall and all took a dip in the water, it was incredible. They do require life jackets, which they provide free of charge. There are restrooms, paved trails, changing rooms, and restaurants and a coffee shop. We ate lunch after the walk and swim and the food was very tasty (highly recommend the ahi sandwich).
