Byodo-In Temple is a fairly nice place to visit, though it is not very large. At the entrance, you can purchase a ticket for $7. The grounds are well maintained and peaceful. Inside the temple, there is a large Buddha statue that visitors can approach and view up close. On the territory, there are several small ponds with a surprisingly large number of fish. There is also a small souvenir booth available. Other than that, there is not much else to see or do. One thing worth mentioning is that on the way to the temple, you have to walk through a cemetery, which may feel a bit uncomfortable for some visitors. While the surrounding area is very beautiful, passing through the cemetery slightly takes away from the overall experience. Overall, it is a calm and interesting place for a short visit, but expectations should be kept modest.
Finding peace at the foot of the Koʻolau Mountains. 🌿⛩️ I’m visiting the beautiful Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. This stunning site is a smaller-scale replica of the over 950-year-old World Heritage Site in Uji, Japan. It was built in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaiʻi. It is a place of deep serenity and reflection. From the moment you ring the bon-sho (sacred bell) to cleanse the mind, to viewing the magnificent golden Amida Buddha, the atmosphere is incredibly grounding. The gardens and koi ponds just add to the tranquility. Friendly reminder to anyone visiting: this is a sacred place. Please remember to remove your shoes before entering the main hall and be mindful of the quiet atmosphere. 🙏
Beautiful Temple! It's $7 per person for admission, not bad, but it's a short trip.. maybe spending anywhere from 5-20 mins. The garden is nice, the pond with koi fish are serene. Ringing the gong bell was fun. Going into the temple to see the Buddha statue, you have to take off your shoes, which is totally fine, but it's a small area. Small benches to sit. Not too meditative bc it's overcrowded with tourists. More of an in and out quick stop. To get there you drive past a mortuary so don't walk on the grass!
