Spitalfields is one of London’s most intriguing and evocative neighborhoods, rich with a history that spans centuries. The area has seen many transformations, from a Roman cemetery to a medieval monastery, then evolving into a bustling merchant quarter before descending into a notorious Victorian slum. Over time, Spitalfields has also been shaped by waves of migration, with various communities and cultures leaving their mark on the streets, buildings, and traditions of the area. While the neighborhood has, at times, harbored a darker side, it is also home to some of the most inspiring and memorable figures in London’s history.
During this tour, we explore both the shadows and the highlights of Spitalfields, wandering through atmospheric alleyways, past medieval ruins, and alongside stunning 18th-century townhouses. Along the way, we’ll uncover the little details and hidden stories that many visitors overlook, providing a rich and immersive experience of the area’s layered history. The tour lasts approximately an hour and 45 minutes and begins by the fish pond on Bishops Square, conveniently close to Liverpool Street Station. For those unable to attend scheduled tours or wishing to explore independently, a self-guided option is available through a downloadable Google map highlighting over 300 historic locations featured on the blog and Instagram, with additional insights accessible via linked posts and reels.

It's a large market where the old fruit and veg market used to be years ago. All covered and plenty of room for moving around. Lots of food places selling all kinds of diverse stuff from Caribbean to Ethiopian. Clothes, jewelry arts and crafts etc. Very busy lots of people around shopping and soaking up atmosphere on Sunday when I was there. Definitely be going again.

Interesting marketplace with many cute little stalls of makers from different parts of the world. Bought a few things, ate some interesting food and had fun. Keep aside 3-4 hours if you really intend to browse through all the stalls and shop.

Amazing place, it’s hard not to find what you want on a Sunday. If you are up for a walk come to Spitalfields Market and enjoy some of the nice food they do here. There are bar terraces as well where you could relax for a drink and if you fancy you could play a game at players social. You could also find nice shops where you could buy things for decorating your home. Definitely something for a family walk and especially for a Sunday lunch things to do.
