The khukuri is a powerful symbol of loyalty and the legendary Gurkha warrior, regarded as a traditional blade among all hill tribes of Nepal. More than a weapon, it is a versatile, multipurpose knife used for everyday tasks such as shaping timber, chopping meat, and preparing vegetables. The blade, forged from tempered steel, is slightly curved and exceptionally sharp, while the handle is typically crafted from wood or buffalo horn. A distinctive nick near the handle—known as the cho—prevents blood from running onto the grip and also represents the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The blade is traditionally housed in a scabbard made of wood and leather, completing this iconic Nepalese tool.

In this hands-on workshop, you will craft your own khukuri with a smaller 6-inch blade, perfect as a meaningful keepsake. Guided by skilled artisans, you’ll take part in shaping the blade by cutting and hammering a raw piece of iron, followed by refining its form and creating the handle. For safety reasons, the final blade grinding will be carried out by the host, and guests are advised to keep a safe distance from the sparks during this stage. At the end of the experience, you’ll take home the knife you helped create—a unique souvenir and a lasting connection to Nepal’s rich craftsmanship and warrior heritage.
