Explore Rotorua Geothermal Valleys and Traditional Maori Arts on a Guided Cultural Adventure

Your journey begins in the Auckland CBD with an early 5:45 AM departure, ensuring you have a full day to explore the wonders of the Waikato and Rotorua regions. A scheduled stop in the charming town of Tirau allows you to stretch your legs and admire the unique corrugated iron sculptures that decorate the streets. This brief interlude provides a perfect opportunity to enjoy local coffee and browse the quaint shops before continuing your scenic drive toward the geothermal heart of the North Island.

Upon arrival in Rotorua, you will head directly to the Te-Puia Geothermal Park, a premier destination for experiencing both natural wonders and indigenous culture. A guided tour of the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute will introduce you to traditional carving and weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations. You will also witness the awe-inspiring power of the Pohutu Geyser as it erupts, sending plumes of steam high into the air, surrounded by a landscape of bubbling mud pools.

The experience at Te-Puia extends to the Kiwi Conservation Centre, where you can learn about the dedicated efforts to protect New Zealand’s national bird. Observing these elusive creatures in a controlled environment is a rare privilege and a highlight for many visitors. Following your exploration of the valley, you will have the chance to enjoy a relaxing session at the Polynesian Spa, where the mineral-rich waters provide a soothing end to your active morning of sightseeing and cultural discovery.

As the afternoon approaches, the tour concludes with a convenient drop-off at your hotel in Rotorua, allowing you to settle in and reflect on the day's events. This comprehensive itinerary perfectly balances the excitement of geothermal exploration with the tranquility of spa relaxation and the depth of Maori cultural education. Whether you are interested in geology, wildlife, or history, this tour offers a well-rounded experience that captures the essence of Rotorua's unique identity and natural beauty.

What an amazing experience! Our tour guide Hunter was fantastic and shared loads of interesting information about his people and culture. It was so good to see the arts institute and the people keeping Maori culture alive. The geysers also put on a spectacular show for us, going off multiple times while we were there. We also got to see some Kiwis for the first time! Then in the evening, the buffet was great, especially the Hangi cooked food! Then the cultural performance at the end was incredible. Well worth the money as we had a blast for several hours! Ka pai!

This is a must do if you visit Rotorua. From understanding Māori traditions, craft education, geothermal geysers, and kiwi conservation through to a fantastic cultural experience with song, dance and a haka. And yes if you are lucky you will get to see one of the kiwi birds in their nocturnal house. Our guide Ngahuia was excellent and was passionate about telling her tribe and ancestors story. A fantastic couple of hours. Highly recommend a visit and make sure you book tickets in advance and ones that include the cultural performances. Afterwards we visited the Pataki Kai cafe for a panini and drinks. Nice end to the visit.

We did the Te Pu combo and what an incredible experience! Well worth it! The guided tour to see the Kiwis and the Gysers was a brilliant start, then the buffet dinner was absolutely delicious, such a range of food to cater to all tastes and dietary preferences! The cultural display was stunning, so interesting to learn immersively about the Māori culture. Then onto the Gyers and light show at the end, which was a stunning end to a wonderful evening. This honestly is a do not miss
