If you are visiting Mallaig, the One Hour Wildlife Cruise is a must-do experience and has become one of the town’s most popular attractions. Designed to fit conveniently with the Jacobite Steam Train and Scot Rail schedules, the cruise departs daily at 12:45, 14:30, and 15:30, with a 17:00 departure on Saturdays, running from April to October. The trip returns in plenty of time for passengers to connect with trains back to Fort William. Leaving the harbour, the cruise offers views of the Isles of Skye, Rhum, and Eigg to the right as it crosses the entrance to Loch Nevis, traveling toward Green Island on the Knoydart Peninsula.
The waters along the route are frequently visited by a variety of wildlife, including birds, seals, porpoises, dolphins, whales, and basking sharks, offering excellent opportunities for observation and photography. The MV Western Isles is equipped with toilets and a whisky bar, and passengers are welcome to bring their own food from local shops or takeaways. Children under five and dogs travel free. The cruise requires a minimum of ten passengers to operate, and cancellations made more than 24 hours in advance receive a full refund. Customers should arrive at least five minutes before departure to ensure smooth boarding. This wildlife cruise provides a scenic, comfortable, and memorable journey through the waters around Mallaig.
